Alice Davises - Hunting for Retro and Vintage Gifts In London

London's retro and vintage treasures are among my top things about the city. If you're looking for something unique for your birthday, a nostalgic Christmas present, or simply something that's more personal than a high-street gift set, London is a dream for anyone who is a fan of the quaintness of the past.

Vintage markets are one of my favorite weekend rituals. Portobello Road always tops my list, not only for its vibrant riot of colour, but also for the sheer variety. There's everything, from mid-century homeware to enamel kitchen tins, as well as classic vinyl records still alive. I've lost track of how many times I've left with "just one small present" and it turned into a bag of treasures.

For something more refined, I usually go to Shoreditch and Islington. There are vintage shops that are boutique in these areas that specialize in specific eras. For example there's a shop that specializes in 1940s style and another that focuses on the 1970s in lighting. It's a shopping experience where you'll end up talking to the proprietor of the shop for a half-hour about the story of a lamp's history or the provenance of a satchel made of leather.

Of course, a large part of the fun is mixing old with the contemporary. I often add a vintage accent to my home with modern packaging or fresh flowers to give it a modern appearance. It's an excellent way to give something old a fresh feel while still honoring its origins.

London is also home to fantastic seasonal fairs, especially around Christmas.
