The Troubling Reality Lurking in Domestic Helper Agencies in Malaysia

Throughout Malaysia, a large number of domestic helpers are recruited every year through Indonesia Maid agencies and foreign domestic worker recruitment companies. While the agencies assure safe placements and fair treatment, the truth for many domestic workers is deeply troubling.

According to human rights groups, foreign maids placed by maid agencies are often exploited by the employers they serve. Cut off from legal aid, many are overworked, paid below minimum wage, and stripped of basic rights. Some are subjected to forced labor.

Despite the critical role of recruitment agencies in the hiring chain, there is very little legal protection to protect abused workers. Weak enforcement allows irresponsible agencies to endanger vulnerable workers.

Malaysia must policy reform—starting with stricter monitoring and systematic controls for every maid agency operating in Malaysia. Only through real accountability can we protect the rights and dignity of every domestic worker.
